Wine Club Release Fall 2023

Life changes so quickly! If you saw the spring photo of how little Bart and Nellie looked, you will be shocked at their current size. At 8 months old, they still think they are lap dogs with Bart weighing close to 100lbs and Nellie at 75lbs. They are so full of energy, curiosity, and mischief - nobody dares lay their work gloves down!

This club letter was intended for release on September 15 as the plan was to begin harvest on or about September 20 this year. I had taken samples, calculated ripening speeds, factored in this summer's drought and KNEW we wouldn't harvest before Sept 18, at the earliest. Then reality. Grape maturity suddenly accelerated beyond speeds ever seen; September 13 became "Go-Day". By the time Sept 20 ended, we were 95% harvested and had worked 100+ hours in 6 days. So, here we are, quasi-recovered from the surge, lamenting the audacity it takes to anticipate the elements! Stupid us - making plans for Mother Nature again! Good news: flavors are awesome, quality is great. Bad news: yield is down (as expected) significantly. Please note, this is the abridged version of our club note, if you did not see the full version, please email us and we will send it out again.

Club Release - Lots of new wines this time. We're introducing the 2022 Karsts Pinot Blanc, the 2022 Ruby Primo, the 2021 Time Waits for No One, and the 2021 Jaguar - notes on each are below. For Family Club, we're also releasing the 2018 The One, our rarely made, uber-reserve pinot noir.

Remember our club basics - everyone gets to make changes if desired. If you want to make substitutions or additions, you need to communicate those changes via email to us by October 8 otherwise, you get the winemaker's pick detailed below. As a Family Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 15% and as a Native Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 10% (plus applicable tax and shipping). Please read this email all the way to the end for useful details. Be well.

Family Club Release

(2) 2022 "Karsts of the Andaman" Estate Pinot Blanc - $36

Our Pinot Blancs continue to take top national awards. Slowly but surely pinot blanc is emerging from the shadows, to garner a top spot in white wine world. Our PB's are always aromatic, dry, crisp, succulent and sultry. The 2022 shows bosc pear, guava, Meyer lemon and a pinch of passionfruit. Add a bit of aromatic spice, and welcome to my preferred daily drinker. Cellar up to 7+ years.

(2) NV (2022) "Ruby Primo" - Estate Ruby - "Chillable Red" - $36

In 2017, when we released our first Ruby, we knew it was a new category - we just didn't know what it would be called. Meet the "Chillable Reds" - the fastest growing wine category in the country. Ruby is a hybrid - the wondrous cross of a dry Provence rosé with a nearby village-rouge. More flavorful, more structured, longer lasting yet somehow still light and enjoyable, Ruby defies expectations. Chill, find a pool, sit, drink. Cellar up to 7+ years.

(3) 2021 "Time Waits for No One" Estate Pinot Noir - $50

This is an incredibly textural wine - pure velvet. More than anything, I love the feel of this wine. The aromatics are subtle but distinct - right now I find currants, red curry powder, Jory clay, tangerine peel and spalted maple. Flavors run the gamut from dark red fruit, baked truffle, cinnamon to earth, fennel root and more. It is young and evolving - this will be a fun one to visit over time as it develops. Cellar up to 15+ years.

(3) 2021"Jaguar" Estate Pinot Noir - $75

This Jaguar has the silkiest, lustrous black coat you've ever seen. The best analogy I can derive for this Jaguar is the alpha male of a lion pride. He is the king of beasts (Jaguars in this case) with flowing mane, regal countenance - let the lionesses hunt for him - he is going to sit on his throne and simply look stellar. Aromatics lean towards rose petal, and cherry liquor - almost a Kirschwasser. The palate is dense velvet cerise, with great viscosity (glycerols) and structure. The tannins are super plentiful but never clunky - the finish coats your mouth in powdered sugar-like texture. Cellar up to 15+ years.

(2) 2018 "The One" Uber Reserve Estate Pinot Noir - $100

This is our second vintage of The One. Counting 2021, we've now made it 3 times in our 18 year history. It is intense yet delicate, weighted yet light, driving yet broad; if you spend some time with it, it is pretty mind bending for the true wine geek. Cellar up to 15+ years.

Wines Available For Addition or Substitution

As always, our list of available wines is organized by scarcity. The Endangered section features wines which are rapidly depleting but can still be acquired at humane prices. The Library allows you a limited reload on older favorites. Edge of Extinction means we have 10 or fewer cases remaining. We have a vastly expanded Large Format section which ships separately from the regular 750 ml bottles. And, of course, the Recently Extinct list - those wonderful wines that now only reside in your private cellars.

Tasting Great/Timely Buys

In this section, your friendly, neighborhood winemaker gives you the inside track on what's cool, what's yummy, and what would be greatly appreciated as a holiday gift!

First off, the Gouges is back! Our estate 2022 "Jumping Ship" Pinot Gouges - the uber rare white grape from Burgundy we have - yielded 67 cases in 2022. To the best of my knowledge, we are still the only winery in the world producing a bottle labelled "Pinot Gouges"! For you white wine lovers, this is the bomb. It is unlike any other white I know, completely scrumptious, nicely balanced and truly fun. It is not part of the club release simply because there is not enough to go around. If you really enjoy white wines, add some of this to your order; you will have no regrets. Price is $60/bottle on the Endangered list.

2016 Time in a Bottle has struck wine nirvana. The next time we enter a European competition it will be the wine to represent. We deliberately held back quite a bit of inventory, with roughly 90 cases in stock. It was a vintage worth holding and will be elegant in the years to come.

Likewise, the 2016 Heretic follows suit - it is dark, elegant, intense, brooding and seductive. I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is one of the best pinots we've ever made, and it's starting to show off.

The 2021 Strawberry Blonde, our Jolly Rancher descendant, is superb. It went on to take gold medals at both Sunset Magazine and the national rosé competition "The Rosé Experience". If you are a chilled summer wine fan, this dry rosé cannot be beat. Gorgeous nose, bountiful dry fruit, zesty mouthfeel. It took golds for a reason. Inventory is getting low.

The 2019 Jaguar, released to club last Fall is really rocking! We started pouring this Jag in the tasting room in August, and it is blowing everyone away! I always hate saying things like this, but it may be my favorite Jaguar to date. The aromatics explode from the glass, the flavors are intense, carried along on racy, velvet acids. If you like fat cats, drink a 2015 or 2018. If you like a fast, muscular kitty, like I do, this is killer.

The 2021 Karsts pinot blanc is converting chardonnay drinkers by the drove. We are getting really good with this varietal, both in the vineyard and the winery. If you like whites, this is the bomb - I am currently drinking more of this wine than any other. Inventory is severely depleted.

Similarly, the 2021 Loh Samah Bay, reserve pinot blanc, is gorgeous. We've started fermenting pinot blanc in "cigar barrels", essentially a stretched, larger barrel of 300 liters. The results are phenomenal - the aromatics are unbelievable.

Events

July 12 and 13, 2024 - Our Annual Sunset Dinner. This is our blowout, over-the-top, fun-fueled-fete of the year. We set up on the patio, commence circa 6:30pm, glide through numerous courses of daring food and wine pairs, with the intent that dessert and Jaguar coincide with the sun reaching the top of the Coast Range, then a monumental sunset transpires. Due to demand, we've moved to a two night consecutive format. Chef Jody outdid himself last year with a full French, 6-course fete. Plan and reserve seats early - we can host 60 people per night. Price will be in the $200/person range, all-in, for food and beverage. Expect superb food, new stories, new wines, great comradery.
