Wine Club Release Spring 2023

Meet Nellie and Bart - double trouble.

First up, and simplest, puppies! Stella, our universally loved and most benevolent Great Pyrenees, just celebrated her 8th birthday. She is still quite active guarding the sheep, ducks, geese and cats, from coyotes and cougars. She can clear a 3' fence without effort, move like a racehorse when needed, and remains fearless in the face of adversaries. But she is eight.

Pyrs are long-lived for giant breed dogs, but we know she will be slowing down and unable to adequately cover the perimeter in the years ahead. So, it was time for new recruits. We acquired Nellie and Bart from a great couple with a remote farm in the Cascade foothills. They have 4 LGD's (livestock guard dogs) of their own, and found themselves "parents" to an unplanned and unexpected litter of pups. We won't buy LGD's without being able to meet both parents because disposition and safety is critical to hosting guests here everyday. Their dogs were great.

It's fun to be able to release wines with some age on them. It is predominantly red, with a little white and pink tossed in. The 2018 Jaguar and Time to Remember make return appearances to anchor the selection. Both are gold medalists from major competitions. The Ruby Primo is included and the new 2021 Karst is being released. A bottle of the secret gold-cap 2016 The One, and to finish, one of my favorite, although poorly named wines, the 2017 A Matter of Time, which should have been named 2017 L'autre, rounds out the release.

Remember our club basics - everyone gets to make changes if desired. If you want to make substitutions or additions, you need to communicate those changes by end of day April 1st or you get the winemaker's pick detailed below. As a Family Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 15% and as a Native Club member, your cost is the retail price shown less 10% (plus applicable tax and shipping). Please read this email all the way to the end for useful details. Be well.

Family Club Release

(2) 2021 "Karsts of the Andaman" Estate Pinot Blanc - $36

For me, Chardonnay is essentially a four-letter word. Our Pinot Blancs have been taking top national awards for over a decade. Our PB's are always super crisp, super dry, super pure. The 2021 shows Granny Smith apple, anjou pear and a touch of red grapefruit. Add the usual clove and cardamom notes, and you have the wine I'm drinking at this very moment. Perfect!  Cellar up to 7+ years.

(2) NV "Ruby Primo" - Estate Ruby - $36

Our radical Ruby is catching on; other winemakers are trying their hand in our nascent  category. Consider Ruby a hybrid wine - the wondrous cross of a dry Provence rosé with a nearby village-rouge. More flavorful, more structured, longer lasting yet somehow still light and enjoyable, Ruby defies expectations. While honeyed on the nose, the palate is dry and crisp - showing flavors of strawberry, raspberry, a touch of marshmallow and toasted oak. Cellar up to 7+ years.

(3) 2018 "A Time to Remember" Estate Pinot Noir - $50

The year marked a serious summer drought. Acid retention in the grapes was the best in a decade. Slight desiccation concentrated sugars and flavors; skins and lignified stem inclusion anchored tremendous tannins. If you like delicate, airy, ethereal pinots, this ain't it. This pinot is explosive, electric, gliding and pure. Blackberry compote, rose petal, raspberry leaf and a touch of umami. Cellar up to 15+ years.

(3) 2018 "Jaguar" Estate Pinot Noir - $75

The 2018 vintage, as a whole, is super intense. It is structured, acid driven and super age worthy. True to its laser-like cherry core, it is one continuous note - the attack, mid-palate and finish do not waiver off course. For me it is akin to an electric river - if there is such a thing. I just buckle up and hang on for the ride. This should progress into a stunning wine, and probably, a heralded vintage. Cellar up to 15+ years.

(1) 2017 "A Matter of Time" Estate Pinot Noir - $65

This wine should be called 2017 L'Autre. These 5 barrels produced 123 cases of a most remarkable pinot. Made from 2017's "rogue" barrels, it is simultaneously big, bold and elegant. The structure is fine but massive, alcohols and acids are perfectly seamed. Nose and palate will show mulberry, sage, dark spice, sandalwood, rose, Ludens cherry, coffee and more - super complex. Cellar up to 15+ years.

(1) 2016 "The One - Gold Cap " Uber Reserve Estate Pinot Noir - $100

So, here is my confessional. This covert 2016 rendition of The One is a cheat. Ryan (my #2) discovered this incredible 2-barrel blend while we were making the well-loved, sold out, "black cap" The One known to all. He found two barrels which, when combined, produced a truly ethereal pinot noir. It is intense yet delicate, weighted yet light, driving yet broad; if you spend some time with it, it is pretty mind bending for the true wine geek. For my palate, this is the best pinot we've produced to date. Now, after living in complete seclusion for 7 years, meet my first dirty little secret. Cellar up to 15+ years.

Tasting Great/Timely Buys

2017 Last Blend Standing is a breakout hit. Aged 42 months in neutral oak barrels it has taken on an entirely new structure, tasting and feeling like a Barolo. We're running out.

2016 Time in a Bottle has struck wine nirvana. The next time we enter a European competition it will be the wine to represent. We deliberately held back quite a bit of inventory, with roughly 125 cases in stock. It was a vintage worth holding and will be elegant in the years to come.

The 2021 reserve pinot blanc, Loh Samah Bay, is gorgeous. We've started fermenting pinot blanc in "cigar barrels", essentially a stretched, larger barrel of 300 liters. The results are phenomenal - the aromatics are unbelievable.

All 3 of our champagnes are really turning heads, and selling quickly - we probably only have 80 cases total left. The 2014 Lussier is a pinot noir dosage, the 2014 Libertus is a pinot blanc dosage, and the 2014 Loertscher is a rosé dosage. All are spectacular. These all aged in tirage for (7) years waiting to be finished - think about it - 8 years to make a bubbly. They are unlike any champagne or sparkling to be found on any retail shelf. Flavorful, textural, bold, with super fine bubble structure - I describe them as Champagne that is "chewy".

The 2014 - 2017 vintages of Jaguar and Heretic are dropping steadily. I try to warn everyone when I see the end coming as I hate the sound of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Consider yourself warned.

Events

July 14 and 15, 2023 - Our Annual Sunset Dinner. This is our blowout, over-the-top, fun-fueled-fete of the year. We set up on the patio, commence circa 6:30pm, glide through numerous courses of daring food and wine pairs, with the intent that dessert and Jaguar coincide with the sun reaching the top of the Coast Range, then a monumental sunset transpires. Due to demand, we've moved to a two night consecutive format. Chef Jody outdid himself last year. Plan and reserve seats early - we can host 60 people per night. Price will be in the $200/person range, all-in, for food and beverage. Expect superb food, new stories, new wines, great comradery.

Housekeeping

As always, our list of available wines is organized by scarcity. The Endangered section features wines which are rapidly depleting but can still be acquired at humane prices. The Library allows you a limited reload on older favorites. Edge of Extinction means we have 10 or fewer cases remaining. We have a vastly expanded Large Format section which ships separately from the regular 750 ml bottles.  And, of course, the Recently Extinct list - those wonderful wines that now only reside in private cellars.

PLEASE NOTE – if you did not get the club letter via email, please check your spam folder and please let us know.

If you wish to make changes or additions to the above order, please send us an email ASAP detailing your preferences (gonative@nativeflora.com). We will be processing the standard orders this week! Please remember - we need to be able to ship in multiples of 6 bottles, so order accordingly.

  • Please contact us if your credit card number has changed or expired(503) 504-1990 or gonative@nativeflora.com. We only need the card number and expiration date, NOT the CCV/security code.
  • Shipping: Unless otherwise notified by you, we will ship to the "Ship-To" address we have on file. If you are new to club, provided a business address for shipping, but now prefer us to ship to your home, please let us know. We adjusted many shipments during Covid, but we did not permanently change your Ship-To Address unless those were your instructions.

Best wishes to you and your families.
